I was looking for an authentic sincere loving church where people can be themselves. I hoped for a church that appreciated poetry and expressed things beautifully. I wanted a church with some intelligent people who read books and question things with curiosity. A church with great music where I could sing harmony in a choir. I wanted a church where my children could feel like full participants while they were growing up. For 25 years I found all this at my church home at Covenant. People here have big souls and big hearts, and because services are created weekly by congregant worship leaders, I get to know more people in the community on a deeper level, and nothing feels pre-packaged or rote; everything feels fresh and timely. This church has loved my kids, and my college kid always wants to return. It’s a smart and nurturing place that attracts retired clergy, mental health professionals, teachers, chaplains and medical professionals, musicians, dancers, artists, poets, 12-step recoverers, people who grew up in different faith traditions, and a diverse crowd, for great reasons. Laura Mayo is one of the best preachers I’ve heard. I love our community service opportunities and missions that support Houston community nonprofits. Bonus points for gluten-free communion without cross-contamination, and GF treats among the great food at hospitality! Bonus points for the labyrinth! Bonus points for a wonderful 1893 organ and a great piano! Bonus points for award-winning meditative uplifting modern architecture, and a gorgeous sanctuary with great acoustics! I grew up Lutheran, but appreciate how Baptists care about personal conscience, and how women often lead in the American Baptist affiliation, and how it’s less hierarchical and more liberal in the sense of ecumenical, egalitarian, feminist, nondiscriminatory, welcoming and inclusive of LGBTQ people. I’ve grown in compassion, learning, inspiration, musicianship, intergenerational friendships, connection to Houston, personal support, meal trains, and prayers in hard times. People drive here from far away to attend, because it’s irreplaceable.

I love this inclusive, progressive and welcoming church with traditional music. I can now worship with all of my LGBTQIA+ friends and hear (and participate in) beautiful music. Thank you Covenant for the perfect church that I didn’t know existed until a few years ago.

Progressive lgbtq+ affirming congregations. Engaged in community outreach and partnering with local charities making a difference in Houston. Thoughtful artistic worship. Thought provoking adult education. Super friendly atmosphere.

Came to see the beautiful building stayed for the gorgeous people. This place is a treasure with gems of people. Best accident I've ever made. The garden is open for volunteers and food is donated to the Houston women's shelter. It's a great way to get some excercise and serve the community at the same time.
