We were wamly welcomed by Mother Bethel's female pastor and congregation during our visit. We were impressed with the beauty, grandeur and history of Mother Bethel AME Church. Our first visit inside was during the Philly First celebration. This historic, pivotal church was founded by Richard Allen in 1787. It is home to the first AME congregation in America, back in 1794. The church vestible for worship is a vision with stained glass windows, chandeliers, burnished wood pews and a large organ. On the lower levels, there are rooms of artifacts, paintings and photographs that honor the church's amazing history. You can request a tour with a church member guide, or do a self-guided tour. An outdoor sculpture of Richard Allen ioverlooks the church. There is some onsite parking .

We visited South Street and went past this landmark church with connections to the famed Richard Allen, founder of the African Methodist Church.
