St. James Cathedral

INCREDIBLE experience. We visited Seattle for the first time and one of the things was to go and visit some Cathedrals around the area. This one is above them all let me just say that. The workers/volunteers are all very kind and welcoming, the stained glass is beautiful, and the little rooms throughout the church are wonderful to walk in. And if you walk outside into this little courtyard there is a bookshop. I wish I knew her name but the kindest lady was in there working, she talked to us for about 45 minutes and has been at this church for 50 years! It was an amazing experience and I would love to return to a mass one day in the future!

I usually come here on Sunday’s to “visit” with my mother, who died 11 years ago. The Virgin Mary was there favorite top tier catholic, so I light a candle for my mom under the Virgin Mary’s painting and chat with mama Victoria. I am not a staunch catholic, but will always be culturally catholic. This new practice of more has given me a new sense of peace and a new outlook on how I grieve for my deeply missed mother. Also, it doesn’t hurt that the architecture is a vision to behold, truly beautiful.

This is a majestic cathedral in the heart of Seattle, one that once loomed celestially over the surrounding urban landscape with its two ornate Italian Renaissance style towers. Now, the buildings surrounding it are much taller, these blocky monoliths of steel and glass, but the cathedral is still distinguished by the artistry and deep care of its architecture. This is a building that evokes devotion, the passions of individual hands and individual minds to honor the sublime power of the divine. It is an emblem of a particular time in the history of the nation and the history of Seattle, when the city was young and Italianate architecture styles were extremely popular, in the early decades of the 20th century. Yet it is also an emblem of a kind of reverence and loving, artfully imaginative devotion to the divine that will never age or decay. This is absolutely a building that must be seen by anyone with an appreciation for spirituality or architecture in Seattle.

Nice Catholic Church to visit, it was a 10-minute walk from the Seattle Convention Center or the Westlake LINK/Monorail station. They have a bookstore beside the church too.
