Passing through town, we stopped at this classic and beautiful church along the roadside. The church stands patiently, looking like it's been waiting for travelers for some time. The building as a quiet, settled grace that seems to only appear in small towns where the light hits it just right. Even before you read the marker, you can feel that this spot has been important to people for a long time. The marker reads, "Originally called Turners Point, this community was founded in 1845 by Elisha Turner. In 1855 the Methodist congregation paid Zachariah Turner and his wife Martha $20 for the original church site. The Rev. J.W. Fields, a Methodist circuit rider living in Kaufman County, witnessed the deed and may have been the organizer and first minister. After the name of the town changed to Poetry, this site was donated in 1886 by J.H. Tate and his wife Nancy. The circuit rider preached only once a month, yet the membership grew to 119 in those early days. It is marker number 8541 and it was erected in 1978 by the Texas Historical Commission.

Very positive, caring, small congregation that made me very happy I stopped in for a visit! I enjoy the massage each week. I've joined the church and I hope you too stop by for a possible future new church family!
